![]() The main components on a PCB include Main Controller IC (works like the CPU), Motor Controller Chip, Cache Chip, ROM/BIOS, Board Number, and TVS Diodes. Troubleshoot PCBĪ hard drive's PCB, or Printed Circuit Board, allows electricity to pass between various components that allow the hard drive to function. If "hard drive not spinning" remains, It's probable that your hard drive has some mechanical or electrical issue. If there is no burning smell on your disk, you can check the power supply simply by connecting your hard drive to your computer using another cable or connecting your hard drive to another computer. In this case, you need to further figure out which component is damaged and replace the component with the one on the same and functional PCB. If there is a burning smell on your hard drive, your hard drive may suffer from a power surge, which can damage the PCB on your hard drive. Thus, it's necessary to do some troubleshooting steps first. You can only get the right solution until you find the specific reason that causes your hard drive to fail to spin up. If you want to know more details about how to fix a hard drive that is not spinning, read on to do some troubleshooting for your hard drive and learn how to cope with the problem. When your hard drive is not spinning, you are recommended to send your device to a professional for manual repair. When your hard drive is not spinning, your computer won't recognize it and you won't be able to recover the data from the hard drive using data recovery software until you fix it. The read/write head stuck on the platter.Electrical failure on the PCB (Printed Circuit Board). In addition to minor matters like a heavy power surge and insufficient power supply, there are other serious causes that may result in the hard drive not spinning. Honestly speaking, when an (external) hard drive is not spinning, it's highly likely there are some issues with the firmware on your disk. ![]() That could happen to an internal hard drive or an external hard drive from Seagate, Western Digital, and more. Hard drive not spinning is one of the situations that mean your hard drive is not working. Instead, you got no spinning sound and the hard drive acted like it's not plugged in at all. When you plugged your hard drive into your computer, you didn't hear the familiar spinning sound that indicates the hard drive is working. Full stepsĬheck if the spindle motor is seized or damaged > If yes, swap the platter. Remove the lid of hard drive > Check if the disk head is on the platter > Move disk head back. Take PCB out of the hard drive > Use probes to touch both ends of the diode. Installation is a simple process, virtually identical to installing an optical drive.Figure out which component is damaged > Replace the components with a new one. (While it's designed for a 3.5" HDD it's easily modified for a 2.5" SSD). And you can accomplish this connection/disconnection "on-the-fly" from the comfort of your computer chair. A simple ON-OFF power switch on the rack is all it takes. The beauty of the mobile rack in your situation is that the secondary drive is both physically & electronically isolated from the system according to YOUR option. We've been equipping our PCs with one, two, or more mobile racks for a good many years now and wouldn't build a PC without at least one. I'm assuming, of course, you're working with a desktop PC and have a vacant exterior 5 1/4" drive bay to mount this type of device. You might want to consider a mobile rack to house a removable HDD (or SSD). So as long as the "noise" generated by the drive is not particularly onerous to you and no system problems have been experienced by you, and there's no reason to believe the disk is otherwise defective, it's hard to see how this disk "spinning up" should be of any concern to you. Whatever normal activity is being generated by the OS affecting the secondary drive is trifling and has no bearing on the health/life of the disk. What is causing my HDD to randomly spin up when i do not need it, is it because there are steam game on it and steam keeps checking?įrankly I don't understand why it would be of any significant concern to you that your secondary HDD is "spinning up" when it is not being directly utilized by you, the user. I have checked the resource manager and the only files being read are from the C drive (the SSD is drive C, HDD is drive E and the SSD reserve is Drive D) The problem is that it is randomly spinning up when i'm not using it. I have set the power setting for the HDD to turn it off after 5 minutes so when i finish a game it turns off. The SSD in the system is for the OS and i have a Western caviar digital HDD for my games. I have a powerful computer and i prefer it to stay quiet which is does till i have this problem.
